By John Nosek
Like Bowie, Lou Reed and Hall and Oates, Bryan Ferry came to public notice on the bisexual-chic wave, a trend that . not only didn't go away, but has since become firmly entrenched in the cultural mainstream. While with Roxy Music, Ferry dabbled with discordant avant garde rock, stretching vast expanses of electric instrumental technology inspired bvy the Velvet Underground.
As a soloist, Ferry bares a heart that lies in early rock standards the rock artist as interpreter. His first solo album ranged from The Teddy Bears' "I Love How You Love Me" to the Miracles "Tracks of My Tears" to "These Foolish Things," (the title track) with Lesley Gore's "Its My Party" done without a gender change.
Another Time, Another Place continued Ferry's infatuation with nostalgia. What other rock artist could claim to be doing contemporary renditions of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Funny How Time Slips Away" and the traditional "You Are My Sunshine?"
Let's Stick Together was perhaps a career highpoint for the British Elvis Presley. Taking the chaotic compositions of Roxy Music, Ferry astonishingly molded them into accessible pop tunes. Another rock first. No one heretofore had done a new interpretation of his/her own material outside of live sets. Yet, the old songs remained: "You Go to My Head," the Everly Bros.' "The Price of Love" and The Beatles' "It's Only Love" done with the suave style of a trendy night-club entertainer.
With In Your Mind Bryan Ferry has successfully blended the styles of 50's, 60's and 70's rock in all new songs, creating a vinyl tribute to the history of rock elements.
"All Night Operator" uptempos another eclectic group, The Manhattan Transfer. "One Kiss" is a 70's unrequited love song with its roots deep in the 50's, "Love Me Madly Again", rock n' roll sex. Ferry's penchant
for camp flows in "Tokyo Joe," a modern day Tokyo Rose replete with g.i. Joes hollering for more.
Abounding in hedonistic love, Ferry's lyrics might appear decadent to some, piercingly perceptive to others. Ultimately, however, the words work on many levels, often carrying double meanings.
Newcomers to Bryan Ferry are urged to first purchase one of his earlier LP's particularly, "These Foolish Things." Ferry evolves. Without initially discovering his history, the listener will not fully appreciate his current work. One thing is certain. Bryan Ferry has developed into a leading spokesperson for art nouveau rock.
JOAN ARMATRA DING
Joan Armatrading (Joan Armatrading) A and M Records.
Joan Armatrading is a cult item. Loved by only a handful of music enthusiasts, Armatrading has yet to reach the masses. Why? She's too different. Combining gospel music with rock affected Aretha soul and acoustic guitar, the West Indies born black woman must baffle most on first listening. Her voice is richly deep, so deep that one almost can visualize a man vocalizing on the second side's

high-energy pieces.
